Eligibility criteria for the Friedrich Ebert Scholarship

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Scholarship for International Students

To apply for this scholarship, please follow the steps below:

(1) Complete the online application. There will be some questions about your career and family history, but no other evidence is required. If you are unsure or need to chat with us before applying, you can contact approximately 480 contact information. (Please double-check deadlines and dates!) An example can be downloaded here:

(2) If you are accepted for a scholarship, we will request two expert recommendations from university professors, as well as information about your previous training and political commitment. First-year students (not master's students) must submit two reports from former professors during the first semester.

At our request, you have three weeks to submit the paperwork. After consulting with us, you have six weeks to obtain an expert opinion, if necessary. Prepare the paperwork while you await our response.

(4) The final decision regarding admission to one of our programs is made by the Selection Committee. The Committee meets several times a year.

Scholarship conditions in Germany

German citizens, international students with appropriate qualifications, and refugees are eligible to apply. Individuals applying to the Friedrich Ebert Foundation must have a proven track record of civic engagement, such as membership in an accepted student government, youth work, associations, NGOs, or political groups. Individuals who have attended university in Germany are not eligible to apply.

Applicants for the Friedrich Foundation Scholarship to study in Germany should possess qualities such as social and political engagement and identification with the values of social democracy; above-average performance in school and studies; political thinking; a thirst for knowledge; tolerance and openness; the ability to work in a team; critical thinking; and self-reflection.

Prospective students entering undergraduate and graduate programs must have the following:

  • First-year students (either German or international) must apply before or at the beginning of their first semester.
  • Confirmation of a place of study or a certificate of enrolment at a German university or technical college recognized by the state or country for the course in which they wish to receive support.

Candidates for a PhD scholarship must have:

  • Unconditional acceptance into the PhD scholarship program
  • Applicants from outside Germany must demonstrate a strong understanding of the German language.
